This American player achieved international fame because of her 16 years of dominance.  Quite the feat for female players considering they didn't play for money or have sponsors back then.  She was the champion multiple times at the French Open, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Whightsman Cup.  She won 19 of the 24 grand slams that the entered between 1922-1938 (singles matches).  She was also a two-time Olympic Gold medalist in the 1924 games.  Despite her success, she was known as quiet, shy, and socially awkward.  Off the court, and due to her tennis success, she became an global celebrity.  In addition to her tennis accomplishments, she was also known for breaking the tradition of wearing ankle-length skirts. She preferred knee-length.
